Interested in winning prizes and making movies to make a difference? Read the following contest details on how to enter the United Way Care to Change Video Competition.
It’s easy
- Come up with a winning idea
- Make a short video that meets the Care to Change criteria (see HOW TO ENTER below)
- Between March 21, 2011 (the “Commencement Date”) and June 15, 2011 at 5:00 p.m. (Pacific) (the “Expiry Time”) (the period between the Commencement Date and the Expiry Time being the “Contest Period”) mail a high quality data file of your video on a CD or DVD along with the Submission Formto:Reel YouthCare to Change Video Competitionc/o Tides Canada400 – 163 Hastings StVancouver, BCV6B 1H5
- Get your friends and family to vote for you once the videos are posted online (keep an eye on this website in July and August for updates about online voting).
- Keep your fingers crossed that our expert judges choose you as the winner. You’ll find out the results on September 14th, 2011. Good luck!
No purchase or payment is necessary or required to enter this Contest. All expenses of Entrants in making a video for the Contest, including all video costs, equipment costs, the cost of all CD’s or DVD’s submitted, and the cost of all postage are the responsibility of the Entrant.
HOW TO ENTER CARE TO CHANGE
- You must live in British Columbia.
- Videos must be no longer than five minutes in length and be in English.
- The sound and technical quality must be of a good standard.
- Any music used must be original (made by you), or used with the permission of the musician. See the Toolkit for links to music.
- One video entry per person or group/team.
- Videos may be in black and white or colour and may be enhanced with graphics, special effects, animation or music.
- All entries must be mailed along with the submission form on or before June 15, 2011, the contest closing date.

- The winning videos will be announced on September 14, 2011.

- Youth (19 years of age and under)
- Adult (20 years of age and up)

HOW TO WIN CARE TO CHANGE
A panel of judges, chaired by Emmy award judge and FanTrust President, Catherine Warren, will be looking at a variety of criteria to pick the Care to Chance video competition winners. There are some key components that your video should include to have a shot at winning. It should:
- Be well aligned with one or more of United Way’s issue areas.
- Answer the question: What does one of these issues mean to me and how do I care to change it?
- Have a clear message.
- Tell a compelling story.
- Be authentic.
- Be mindful and respectful of sensitive and controversial issues.
- Inspire compassion/empathy (could be in a sad or a humorous way).
- Motivate audience to care.
- Motivate audience to act i.e. share the film with others, visit United Way website, learn more.
- Be creative and original.
- Maintain audience attention throughout.
- Have a high production quality.
- Use sound / music / actors / subjects in a way that enhances and compliments the film.
HOW TO SUBMIT YOUR VIDEO
Enter by Mail: Burn the data file of your video to a disc. Download and complete the Submission Form. Send the completed submission form and video on disc to:

All entrants will be required to provide contact information, the name of the video and their agreement with these contest rules. Each entrant is solely responsible for ensuring that all information provided is up to date and accurate. Each entrant is required to confirm, and to indemnify United Way of the Lower Mainland (UWLM) in respect of, all permissions, waivers and releases of any individuals who are depicted in the submitted video. All entries by Youth entrants must be signed by the legal guardian of such Youth to be valid submissions.
